Dispatch

From the outskirts of empire

In my previous life I was an academic. Now I don’t know what I am. The launch of this monthly dispatch marks my departure from universities. It is meant to be a vehicle for me to remain engaged with the world, to make sense of it, and to educate myself – all the while sharing what I’m learning in the process. It is meant to be a broad umbrella for my creative energies and expression, including sharing commentary, analysis and updates on political economy, macroeconomics, monetary policy and central banking, and money and finance. The idea is to keep an eye on the global as well as the local (especially what’s happening locally here in Pakistan.)

I am also hoping that it will help me develop a new way of seeing things, and to at least record and work through my attempt to develop a new way of doing things and a new way of seeing things – beyond, and perhaps above, the practice of academic economics.

Beyond my “areas of expertise”, I’m also planning to write and share reviews of books, music records, movies and video games. Based on my experience of universities, I will also continue to observe and write about what’s happening in universities.

The dispatch will bring you a heterodox – and human – point of view.

[Econ Warrior’s Dispatch is a fortnightly newsletter bringing you commentary, analysis and updates on

  • global political economy,
  • Pakistan’s political economy,
  • macroeconomics
  • monetary policy and central banking
  • money and finance
  • monetary policy and the State Bank of Pakistan,
  • and reviews of book on said topics

Additionally, my writing on

  • books im reading
  • Music I’m listening to (look up length of music album reviews on FT – I checked two reviews. One was 300 words, another was 350. So they can be brief.)
  • Movies im watching
  • Games im playing

from a heterodox perspective. In a world of AI-generated slop, this is a newsletter with a heterodox – and human – point of view. It is meant to be a vehicle for my expression, the practice of my writing craft, to remain engaged with the world, and as a vehicle for education for myself. I am trying to make sense of the world.

As always, your feedback and comments on the newsletter are most welcome. If you’d like to get a feel for the kind of things I write, I’d encourage you to explore the writing published on my blog which is mostly available for free apart from anything published in a journal.

Why is the newsletter called “Econ Warrior’s Dispatch”:

A colleague called me “our econ warrior” one day. He is a senior and respected colleague and I don’t for one second doubt his sincerity. He never explained what he meant by it, but it certainly sounded like a compliment. I really liked that phrase – econ warrior. And it got me thinking about myself and my work.

About me:

I am a heterodox economist with a focus on central banking and monetary macroeconomics. At present I am an assistant professor of economics at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. My PhD dissertation, consisting of three essays on the theory and history of central bank evolution, was written and completed in 2022 at The New School for Social Research, which is my intellectual home.

Everything in my work that is good has come to me from my teachers and is dedicated to the memory of my late brother, Raza Khan. Everything in my work that is false and mistaken belongs to me.
